It seems I'll have some work to do in order to establish ‘lanterfanten' as a shared notion and positive approach to learning – but it already sounds beautiful! Maybe combining the notions is a way to get started: lanterfanten = procrastination + hanging around (as it links with time, space and narrativity), but then the non-intentional, non-direct, non-deliberate sense of exploration should be part of it too.

Capitalism has not the objective of creating work; it is a system that aims at profit. By means of the technological revolution, this aim is reached with less labour than ever before. The knowledge and service economy is progress; it diminishes the costs of labour. To keep the little labour that capitalism still needs as cheap and accessible as possible, the neo-liberal system came up with a solution: make people crave for work.  One achieves this by putting work forward not only as a means to consumption, but also as the sole road to self-esteem.

The one who does not work, ridicules with his idleness my dressage and sacrifices. This is why the non-worker has to prove that he wants to work and master himself, and be responsible for finding work. He has to prove that my self-mastery is the sole source of my worth; and that it is not a question of sheer luck. If my work is my merit, then his laziness should be his fault.  It is clear that this attitude is advantageous to the capitalist system: in our demand for proof we end up pushing the non-worker out of the welfare system and into work at any price. Cheap labour, precarious labour, flexible labour, stupid labour, labour that destroys man and nature, we couldn’t care less, as long as the other is not lazy and proves his worth by merit, like we do. Our self-esteem as constituted by hard working is at stake; and this is why we resent the lazy, those who resist joining in the apology of work. Those who are just sitting there.

Car c’est bien à une mobilisation, avec son corrélat, surtout ne pas penser, que sont soumis les chômeurs censés rivaliser férocement pour un emploi plus qu’hypothétique. Ceux qui ont du travail et ceux qui n’en ont pas sont d’ailleurs pareillement mobilisés, les premiers par la cause sacrée de la compétitivité, les seconds, sous la surveillance d’une armée de « petites mains », par l’impératif d’avoir à manifester leur motivation à se vendre à n’importe quel prix, à se rendre désirable, à séduire. Bref à se prostituer, non en échange d’un travail certes – mille candidatures motivées pour dix postes – mais pour démontrer, encore et toujours, qu’ils restent mobilisés.

L’ennemi a gagné car la réponse n’est autre que cela: le ressentiment (« qu’il travaille comme tout le monde ! ») a déjà capturé l’imagination, la puissance de penser, la force de créer. Only the Enlightenment redeemed our penchant to while away the hours in wonder. The English philosopher Thomas Hobbes called curiosity the “singular passion” separating humans from animals. Even better, it was “a Lust of the mind, that by a perseverance of delight in the continual and indefatigable generation of Knowledge exceedeth the short vehemence of any carnal Pleasure.” What pleasure we might know by letting curiosity have its way with us for an hour or two.
