Reading Notes

Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, in speaking of the flower language, says: “There is no color, no flower, no weed, no fruit, herb, pebble or feather, that has not a verse belonging to it; and you may quarrel, reproach, or send letters of passion, friendship, or civility, or even of news, without even inking your fingers.” [789]

There is said to be a “singing tree.” Each leaf of this tree is musical, and all the leaves together make the most delightful harmony. [843]
