• cleaned up as much as possible (whitespace, etc.)
• rtf format preserving local formatting only (bold, italics, etc.)
• and optionally, basic style indications (headings, subheadings, body text)

• “double” + “smart/real” first-level quotes
• italics for foreign words not in dictionary (standard practice)
• numbers generally spelt out when the numerical data is not the focus, except for dates and other exceptions
• punctuation inside the “quotes,” not “outside”. (choosing the aesthetic versus the logical option for punctuation)
