+[[the_ocean_connects_us|The Ocean Connects Us]] was a daylong event at the Trinity Buoy Wharf on the bank of the River Thames. It was a day of participatory experiences, learning and exchange – including the launch of new research from the FrameWorks Institute into how the public thinks about marine conservation – to build on what works, strengthen existing connections, seed new ones and explore possible new approaches in communicating the value of the ocean in people’s lives.

+The first Marine CoLAB workshop of 2016 began by deepening the conversation about the [[workshop 20160121#people_oceans|values]] connecting people and the ocean. The group continued working on the vision, [[workshop 20160121#mission|mission]] and strategy of Marine CoLAB through the [[workshop 20160121#values_based_approach|lens]] of values and systems change. As part of the strategy conversation, the group specifically focused on examining the [[workshop 20160121#the_lab_approach|LAB approach]], including the [[workshop 20160121#action_research_cycle|action research cycle]] as a possible framework for a learning lab. In the afternoon the scope and roles of the [[workshop 20160121#marcolab_incubator|MarCoLAB Incubator]] were further clarified. The day ended with an update from the [[workshop 20160121#incubatorsupb|London SUP-B Free]] project. Finally, plans for the [[workshop 20160121#upcoming_workshops|upcoming workshops]] (in February and March) have been sketched out, focusing on developing a workplan for 2016 and a long term operating and business model for Marine CoLAB.

-The Marine CoLAB could develop in several directions; from temporary sessions held on cargo ships or icebreakers, to site specific work in marine parks, remote islands or mangroves. Further workshops, seminars, field trips or thematic working groups could all enhance the work that has been brought into focus with the initial workshops. Our current suggestions would include monthly or bi-monthly meetings (which could comprise smaller working groups or the wider community of interest) periodic in-depth thematic working retreats (several days), space for more ad-hoc temporary sessions based around emergent topics with presentations or sessions in existing forums.
