Groworld Bazaar at Pixelache 2011

Planning stuff.

Workshop info/requirements

A worklab where light energy is transformed into electric energy with food. Based on photovoltaic (solar) and culinary technologies and designs, the participants will experiment with mostly plant based edible materials creating 'e-sandwiches/sushi's' that transform light into electricity. Aesthetics and tastes will be tested and appreciated on heliotropic tickling tongues.

  • No pre-existing knowledge required.
  • Max. nr. of participants: 16
  • Duration: 3hrs
  • Cost per person (materials): max. 10Eur (maybe a bit more if fruits/vegetables are very expensive in helsinki…)

  • edible silver
  • vegetables/fruits
  • electrolyte
  • conductive thread
  • seringes
  • gelatines - 4 types
  • baking soda
  • powder sugar
  • beewax candle: 2
  • alpha lipoic acid
  • coffee filter

Infrastructural Needs

  • 10 working tables
  • cooking stove
  • 4 pots/pans
  • sink+water
  • electricity

Where: Suomelinna island/ Helsinki When: Friday/ 3 hours in Total Nr. Participants: about 20

Flow of the workshop:

  • short introduction on seedballs -Fukuoka
  • slideshow about selected plants and what they are good for.
  • explanation of the making of seed balls.
  • making the seed balls.

In the end of the workshop people will be able to take it with them. Would be good to have print outs of how to make seed balls, plant names: latin, finish, english? We still need some help of the local botanists or permaculture people

Requirements

  • 3 10litre buckets (preferrably 2nd hand, that can be borrowed for the day)
  • 3 large gardening sieves (preferrably 2nd hand, that can be borrowed for the day)
  • 2 large flat containers for seedball mixture - a baby bath or something of that size, (preferrably 2nd hand, that can be borrowed for the day)
  • 1 large, or several smaller tarps (to cover ½ of the brugzaal), (preferrably 2nd hand, that can be borrowed for the day)
  • 1 kg mixture of 8-10 dry native seeds (or if not native, well adjusted to the environment), best a mixture of 2-3 grasses, 2-3 flowering plants, 2-3 shrubs, , 1-2 groundcovers, 1-2 bushes, 1-2 trees, that can form a plant guild (http://lib.fo.am/plant_guilds). Keep the seeds for bushes and trees separate from the rest. Preferrably look for seeds that are endangered, and/or edible by humans/animals, good for keeping the water levels appropriate for other plants, not overly invasive for other plants and buildings (the roots of larger plants should go deep rather than wide, to avoid problems with walls and fundations of houses).
  • 5 kg dry rich plant compost (with some natural repellents), NOT animal compost or manure.
  • 5kg dry red clay (fine, preferrably sifted), 5 parts, NOT grey or white clay.
  • 2kg water

material budget: max 150€ - 200€ ???? out of blue, please correct me Where and who will take care of plant seeds? (not sure how much that could cost)
