• progess made on his own, withdrawn from society, recluse
• extensive experience of life (laterns)
• modern intepretation could be as a reclusive scientist
• bitterness or depression

• Artemisia absinthium, wormwood. mixed with ink so mice wouldn't eat letters/books, flea repellent, in Absinthe, reducing melancholy and “black bile”
• Agnus Castus, monk's pepper. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnus_Castus historically used to reduce sexual drive, reduce excitement, anaphrodisiac.
