Softwear Workshop

day 1 [wed.20051026]

basic electronics

  • circuit diagrams
  • conductors/insulators/resistors
  • two formulas to remember “V=IR” and “P=VI”
    • Voltage (V) measured in Volts
    • Current (I) measured in Amps
    • Resistance (R) measured in Ohms
  • avoid short circuits
  • sensors → transducers
  • directional/non-directional components (in general, directional components are marked (eg. +/-, lines, etc))
    • resistors (nd)
      • variable resitors / thermistors / photoresistors /FSRs
    • capacitors (can be n or nd)
    • diodes /LEDs (d)
    • switches
      • quite versatile. anything which connects/disconnects 2 conductors
    • transistors / relays
      • switching devices
    • piezoelectric
  • serial (in series) & parallel circuits
  • using breadboards → [ ]
  • using a multimeter → [ ]
    • using thermochromic ink to demonstrate resistance
  • soft circuits
    • electrically identical to breadboard circuits
    • use traditional techniques for working with fabrics (cut, sew, stick)
    • rely on conductive expoxy rather than soldering components
    • silver organza → woven silver/silk in warp/weft
    • conductive threads → often uses threads, rather than wires. 2 approaches, either non conductive core, wrapped with conductor; or threads saturated with metalic particles, then spun.
      • silver/gold coated threads, conductive, low resistance, easily frayed
      • bekaert > nylon coated with stainless steel, sturdier (can be used in sewing machine), higher resitance.
      • bekaert > silvered
      • various combinations, woven threads.
    • see examples → [ ]
    • gorex > resistive heating
    • nitinol > SMA nickel/titanium, variable temp. for setting, flexible when cold
    • conductive EM shielding materials > http://lessemf.com/
    • color/colour changing/conductive textiles > http://xslabs.net/color-change
